The "Securing Ships, Ports & Maritime Infrastructure from Underwater Threats: an UnderSec Project Workshop," is scheduled to take place on October 22, 2024, at NMIOTC, Chania, Crete, Greece. The workshop aims to address the growing challenges in the maritime security domain, with a particular focus on the underwater environment and foster a comprehensive understanding of the evolving underwater security landscape and the innovative solutions being developed to safeguard ships, ports, and critical maritime infrastructure.

 

The workshop is organized by the UnderSec Project, a European Union-funded initiative that brings together a multinational and interdisciplinary team of experts in maritime security and underwater security. The overarching goal of the UnderSec project is to develop a modular and holistic approach to enhancing the underwater security situational awareness, decision-making support, and response capabilities of ships, ports, and critical maritime infrastructures against underwater threats and criminal acts.

 

The workshop is structured into three main sessions:

 

1.     Keynote Talks by VIP Speakers: This session will feature high-level presentations from distinguished speakers, who will provide insights into the policy-driven approach to EU maritime security, the European Defence Agency's roadmap for strengthening defence capabilities with a focus on underwater security, and the geopolitical importance of underwater security for ships, ports, and critical maritime infrastructure.

 

2.     Panel discussion regarding the context of Underwater Threats to ships ports and Maritime Infrastructures: This session will delve into the various aspects of underwater security, including the general maritime security framework with a focus on the underwater domain, the legal and regulatory landscape, the emerging underwater security threats and trends, the vulnerabilities of ships, ports, and maritime infrastructure, the underwater security protection mission and capability gaps, and the importance of security information intelligence in this domain.

 

3.     Panel discussion regarding the UnderSec Solutions to enhance ports, ships and maritime Infrastructures underwater security: In this final session, the workshop will showcase the UnderSec project's approach to addressing the identified challenges and capability gaps. Participants will learn about the UnderSec system's high-level overview, its individual technologies, the added value it brings to maritime security, its operational use and interoperability, as well as the disruptive benefits and challenges faced during its development.
